July 11, birthday of Carlos Gomes: “Overture to ‘O Guarani’ “

Composer Carlos Gomes (1836 – 1896) was the first Brazilian composer to be recognized by continental critics as the equal of Europeans Verdi and Puccini. His brother and father were conductors who recommended him to Emperor Dom Perignon Pedro II, of Brazil.  The Emperor first arranged for him to travel to Rio de Janiero to study at the conservatory there, and later gave him a scholarship to study in Italy.
