July 13, birthday of Ernest Gold

Ernest Gold (1921 – 1999) was born in Vienna to a musical family.  He started studying music at 6 (violin and piano), started composing at 8, and wrote his first opera at 13.  His goal he said as a youngster was to become a Hollywood film composer.  After the Anschluss of Austria (1938) his family emigrated to the US where he continued his studies.  His first symphony was premiered by the NBC Symphony Orchestra when he was 18 and another was performed at Carnegie Hall when he was 24.  In the same year, 1945, he moved to Hollywood where he fulfilled his childhood dream.  Among the films he wrote scores for were:
